They had made their way slowly to the Hospital Wing due to Jac becoming euphoric and limp at times. Together, Jac and Ian walked into the Hospital wing, Jac hanging onto Ian. "Look at all the pretty colours, Ianny," she said dreamily as they walked through the sunlight streaming through a high window. The sunlight looked to Jac like a rainbow and if she stood in the light for long enough she would fine the leprechaun and get rich.
Jac was pulled away and put on a bed. It was very bouncy so Jac, feeling like she was five again, began bouncing on it. She giggled like a little girl and waved her arms up and down like a chicken. Suddenly her stomach lurched again and her head throbbed particularly meanly. "Woo!" she groaned, lifting a hand to her forehead. "Remind me not to do that again," she said to Ian.

Arista had been restocking her healing potions and salves. The cupboard had been bare when she started, and had to ask the potions master to make her up some more. Arista was very capable to do it herself, but she had been so busy with setting up the other things, she knew she would have time.
Clinking the bottles around, Arista put them in her own special memorized order, by color, starting with her favorite color, yellow. "Anti-vibrant cream." she whispered as she placed a ironically vibrant green bottled solution on the shelf. She picked up the next bottle, an emerald green salve. Arista racked her brain, what was it.
"Look at all the pretty colours, Ianny,"
Arista heard a young ladies voice come from the entrance of the hospital wing. Peeking out from behind the cabinet, Arista spotted two Gryffindor students, older students. A boy was greatly helping a young lady down the hallway. She was obviously not herself, unless she was easily distracted by shiny objects normally.
Arista placed the salve down immediately, and rushed over to her patient, her deep rose colored robes billowing behind her. "Here," she said offering to help to boy. "Lets sit her down."
Arista carefully helped the girl to sit on the nearest bed. She immediately started bouncing like a small child. Arista thought it best that she held the girl down to stop her. Arista waved her wand toward a small cooler where she kept icepacks. Of course they were muggle inventions, but some simple things were still better.
PLacing it on the girl's head, she laid her back. "So, what exactly happened her, Ianny, do they call you?" Arista said with a small smile, knowing fairly yell the young man did not let his friends call him "ianny".
(I expect Ian will be joining us at some point?)

To Jac, the world began to whirl again. While Ian and she had walked to the Hospital Wing the world had kept relatively still. But now it swayed violently again bringing with it a wave of nausea washed over her as she felt something cold on her head. She narrowed her eyes and frowned, staring to the source of the cold on her head, and managed a weak smile. "My brain has turned to ice, Ma'am," she said as she lifted her legs onto the bed.
Her head hit the pillow on the bed a little harder then she had intended and she groaned. "Ow," she moaned and put her hand to her head. It was then that she felt the ice pack but being pureblood she was ignorant of what it was. She frowned again at the healer and tried to muster the strength to say something but the content of her stomach jumped into her throat and she rolled onto her stomach, clutching onto the edge of the bed. She managed to get a substantial amount of the content of her stomach onto the floor with on cruel lurch of her insides.
Her hair, instinctively on her part, grew shorter so as not to get into the way of her vomit. She hung over the edge of the bed for a while longer and stared miserably at the floor. The ice pack on her head began to slide off slowly, then quickly gained momentum and fell onto the floor with a loud plop. "I feel better," she groaned quietly, still staring at the floor.

"No, No." Arista said with a smile. "It's the ice pack." She said, adjusting it on the girl's head. Seeing the look on the girl's face, Arista cracked another smile. "It's just ice dear." She said, knowing that the girl was questioning the new healer's sanity.
Arista was just going to ask the girl her basics, name, house, and year, when she retched over the side of the bed. Arista frowned, putting her hand gently on the girl's back. As she sat back up, Arista noticed the shorter hair and smiled. "Clever trick you have there." She indicated her hair before flicking her wand and muttering "Evanesco" and the vomit disappeared.
"I'll bet you do dear." She said, walking over to the other side of the bed, and picking up the ice pack. She thought about placing it over the girl's forehead again, but then shook her head. She leaning over the girl, propping up her pillows and then smiled at her. "Now, down to business, and getting you feel better." Arista said, sweeping her long black hair into a loose braid and laying it across her shoulder. "First off, Name, House, Year." She said to the girl. "And now, What happened to make you get this sick?"

Jac spat on the floor; the taste in her mouth was awful and that was nothing compared to the burning in her throat. The world had thankfully stopped spinning and she could see straight, a great wonder for her. If she had known that she would have vomited a long time ago.
She lay back down and frowned, raising a hand to her forehead, and groaned. "Jac Bigglerstall, Gryffindor, Seventh year." It was her most said sentence and she could chant it in her sleep. She closed her eyes and tried to think when she first became dizzy. "Ian and I," she began, "were in the library. We found a book - well I found a book that wasn't a library book and a few pages were cut out." Jac dropped her arm to her side and looked at the healer. "They were very neatly cut out. I - I cut my finger on the cut paper and then became dizzy, light, nauseous, my vision became blurred and ..." she couldn't say any more. Jac flung herself over the edge of the bed and vomited again.

Arista listened carefully to the girl's story, after noting her name, year, and house into her books. Arista again placed her hand on Jac's back as she vomited. It was the worst feeling in the world, to vomit, Arista understood, and she needed to get this girl better fast. Again, the healer cleaned up the mess under the bed, and summoned a bucket for Jac to vomit in if need be.
The book, it seemed, was highly suspicious. "May I take a look at the cut?" Arista said, taking Jac's hand into her own. She turned it palm up to examine the finger. The cut wasn't deep, but it was in fact bleeding. The skin around it had become swollen and black. Arista starred at the wound. She touched it and felt Jac recoil. Paper cuts alone were painful, but this was a super paper cut. "Ah, yes," Arista said. "I think I know what happened. But just to make sure..." Arista said, waving her wand toward a band aid which sprung around Jac's finger immeditally. It was just a temporary bandage, Arista would need to work one the girl's finger a little more if it turned out that her hunch was correct.
"Is that the book in question?" Arista said, motioning to the book, Ian held in his hands.

This was by far the most disgusting thing that had ever happened to Jac. She was usually of pristine health and besides the odd broken bone, easily mended with a spell, she was rarely here. But this, this was different. She could feel it, in her gut, the way that her finder burned white hot when the healer touched it. Jac's face contorted against the pain and she involuntarily twitched.
I know what happened ...
Jac frowned at the lady, both bewildered and curious. She lay on the bed and looked from her to Ian to the book. "It is," she said and slowly nodded her head, closing her eyes. "I just don't understand why anyone would want to cut out pages of a World War Two book." It was now the most nauseating thought to Jac, that someone would want to desecrate a book. She rested her forearm on her hot forehead and listened intently.

Arista nodded. "I know, It's ok, well get you back to normal in no time." She smiled. Jac was a nice girl, she could tell. After all the poor girl was worried about the book!
Arista flicked her wand toward the book, and floated it to the end of the bed. Still using her wand, afraid to touch the book, she flipped it open to the torn pages. There was a trace of Jac's blood where she sliced her finger. She looked closer. The other pages were all yellow with age, but they were a pale yellow. This torn page was outlined with a mustard yellow color. Arista nodded. She closed the book with her wand, and floated it to her desk. She would need to talk to the librarian later.
"Yes," she said to Jac. "Everything is going to be just fine. I've figured to all out." Arista smiled. She liked Jac, she was very clam, a very good patient. But, just in case she got worried, Arista decided to keep her mind of of everything. "So Jac, You like to read I suppose?" Arista said, taking up her hand and taking off the band aid, examining her finger again.

Jac watched from under her arm as the healer took her book. She was just about to ask what she was planning on doing with it when a particularly nasty lurch kept her mouth shut. Her arms shot to her sides. Her nausea was swimming around her again. Trying to ignore it, suppress it, she concentrated on Otis's voice. She faced the high roof of the Hospital Wing and closed her eyes.
"Yeah," she groaned, trying to relax as she took the funny sticky thing off her finger, "I love to red. I'd read almost anything you put in front of me." She smiled but involuntarily flinched as her finger seared. "History is fascinating," she continued, trying not to think about her paining finger, "and Care of Magical Creatures, my brother writes those."

Arista poked around the nasty cut. The black skin was starting to spread down her finger. Arista shook her head. She didn't want to do it, but she knew she had to.
"Oh, You mean he's a writer? Thats a very interesting profession." Arista put on a smile for the girl. Yes, she would have to. It didn't seem like there was any other way.
Arista waved her wand behind her, still listening to Jac. A cart rolled to her, on top a thick bandage, cotton swabs, and scissors. Arista got up to look in her cabinet. She needed to find the potion to cure Jac. "Keep talking, I'm listening." She encouraged Jac, as she put her hand on her hip examining the colored bottles. "Ah, yes." She said, grasping a deep plum colored liquid which was right in front of her.
She walked back to Jac, clutching the bottle. She waved her wand again, and a chair casually floated over. Arista sat down. Now for the explanation.
"You're old enough to understand whats going on, so I'll tell you. I believe that the ripped pages were coated with Doxy power. Give it time, and Doxy powder will soak into most surfaces. This explains your sickness. It effects everyone different, however, I think yours is the worst potential case I have ever seen." Arista said, picking up a cotton swab from the cart. She enjoyed using muggle tools. They were more thorough.
"You see, it got under your skin and maybe into your blood stream. Notice the black. It's rotting away your skin. Now for the bad news." Arista said, wiping the wound trying to clean it out so she could see it better. She knew it hurt, but it would all be over soon.
"I have to cut away the black skin from around your finger before I can administer the Doxy potion." She gestured toward the plum liquid. "It is going to be painful, I'll grow the skin back immediately after, but are you going to be able to handle it?"Arista said, squeezing her hand for strength.

Jac flinched as her finger seared again. She glanced at her acing finger and saw that where a bright red cut once was there was now a gaping black crust that reminded her of bread. The black had spread down her finger too, reaching close to her knuckle.
"Yeah," she said, looking away from her finger, "you could call him that. But he only writes Care of Magical Creatures hand books. It's what he loves so I'm not complaining. Plus I get free books out of it which is always great!" Jac managed to smile and continued, "but Ed's always been a fantastic writer so it made sense. He wrote for The Daily Prophet for a while too but he didn't like the politics."
Jac had watched the healer go to a large cabinet and take out a small purple vial. She was back and sat next to Jac with a stern expression. Jac pushed herself up onto her elbow and frowned at Ms Otis. Her tone worried Jac. Doxy powder? Jac frowned at the name. She knew Doxys were troublesome but this powder stuff sounded down right dangerous. She listened solemnly.
"Bad news?" Jac mimicked in horror. "That's terrible news," she said staring at the rotting flesh on her finger. She knew it would be painful, cutting skin away, and she knew she could handle it. She took a few deep breaths, lying back down and staring at the roof again. Jac closed her eyes, arms flat next to her. She curled her good hand into a fist and raised her injured finger. "Do what you must," she said, eyes griped tightly closed.

"Right, thats a brave girl." Arista said with a smile. She was glad that Jac was taking this calmly. Main of her patients couldn't handle pain to well. It was hard to shrink noses, which was actually quite painful, if they were screaming the whole time!
Arista reached over to the bedside table. She had placed a small bottle of re-grow formula on every bedside. It had seemed logical after the time when she had six re-grows at once. Placing it on the small tray she had in front of her, she readied her wand. The cutting she would do by magic. It would be more precise, Arista would accidentally cut away any good skin. "Now, here we go. Deep breath now." Arista took one with the girl.
Arista muttered the spell, and a thin purple light flared out from the tip of her wand. She steadied the wand, and guided the purple light toward Jac's finger, which she had laid out flat on the bed. With this she cut away the black flesh. Even with magic it would feel as though she were cutting it away with scissors. It couldn't be helped. She tried to be gentle, but she knew she really had no control. Finally, after inspecting it for any signs of black, Arista had finished.
Jac's finger was bloody, but clean once again. Arista wiped away the excess blood with a towel, and took up the re-grow potion. Dabbing it on as towel, Arista could see the bright pink liquid. "Funny how it is such a happy color, no?" She smiled at Jac, feeling quite sorry for the girl. Arista didn't envy her wounds.
Arista dabbed the re-grow potion on the cut away skin. With in five seconds, Jac's finger was good as new. Hopefully all stinging had subsided. Arista wiped away the rest of the blood, and showed Jac her new finger. "Not even a scar!" Arista said, smiling widely. "Boy, am I good or what!"
"Now, you're not done just yet." Arista said. Pointing to the Plum potion on the tray. "But we have to wait a little while, just to make sure you don't have any reaction to the re-grow potion. A second year had a nasty allergic reaction the other day and started re-growing extra body parts." Arista said, shaking her head. It had been a messy job, but quite hysterical once the foot had fully grown on the side of the poor second years head.
"Do you have any other siblings besides your brother?" Arista asked passing the time, getting rid of the bloody towels and cleaning up all the mess she had made.

Jac took the deep breath as instructed and though she braced herself for the searing that would surge through her finger, she was unprepared for just how sore it was. She bit down hard on her teeth, screwed up her face, and groped for the sheets with her good hand. But she kept her shoulder stiff so her arm and hand would keep still.
She could feel her own hot blood slowly soaking the sheets under her hand and she felt like gagging again. She didn't, however, for the next thing she knew her finger was burning in a new kind of way. She slowly opened her tearful eyes to see her finger was all there. No scar, she thought, nothing to show Ed when I see him again. She studied her finger for a long moment, listening to the Healer, and was amazed at how normal it looked in comparison to before.
"I don't feel any different," she said, feeling her stomach area for other protrusions that might pop out at any second. "I think I'm in the clear." Jac sat up, crossed her legs and stared at her finger again. "You are good," she said, smiling happily, "very good!" She smiled at Otis. "I've got four, two brothers, two sisters." She thought about them and thought she should write to them when she could.

Arista laughed. "Don't be to sure." She said to the eager girl. She gently took her shoulders and leaned her back to a laying down position. "You forget that the Doxy Powder is still in your blood." Arista smiled. "It's nasty stuff. Highly toxic, especially in liquids. You see, Doxy Powder is odorless, tasteless, and is just a white powder when you look at it plain. Looks just like powdered sugar."
Arista picked up the book Jac had brought with her. She was carefully to touch only the binding. "Would you like to hear my theory?" Arista said, placing the book in her lap. "Someone, a long time ago probably, mixed Doxy Powder and water and made a paste they brushed onto the edges of the paper in this book. How long it was sitting there, I'm not sure. I will venture a guess at a very long time. You see, like many potions, Doxy Powder strengthens over time, and that cut became pretty black pretty fast." Arista said. "Well, I think we have waited long enough. No feet growing from your face then?"
"Wow, you have a big family. As do I." Arista smiled. "I have four older sisters. I love being the youngest." Arista said, half jokingly. She took the dark plum bottle and poured some of its contents into a glass Arista had summoned over. The cup's glass was tinted green so the plum color looked brown. Arista smelled the cup and smiled. "You are in for a treat." Arista said with a smile. "It taste just like your favorite soda!" Arista handed the cup to jac. Of course the potion tasted like dirt, but Arista liked to trick her patients that way. She needed Jac to take it, and get it all down. A little white lie for the better of her health never hurt.

Jac didn't fight Otis when she pushed her down: her head had begun to throb violently, distorting her vision. Jac frowned hard and closed her eyes. "I ... I see what you mean," she said weakly but then began to giggle. She could hardly see anything yet she could 'see' this. It amused Jac. She didn't laugh half as long or nearly half as hard as she usually would have because her muscles began to ache again, throb and burn like white hot fire.
Sugar, Jac thought, must remember that. She was always, even in her panicked states, ready to remember things she may need in the future. Her theory? Jac thought, and nodded slowly. It would be interesting to see how much the healer's differed from her own. Jac listened, eyes still closed, and began to smile as she heard more and more. She had thought along the same lines and was going to mention it when the healer asked for any extra feet. Jac felt her face, shook her head.
"Family," Jac said and nodded, "very big." She managed a weak smile and opened her eyes. She blinked a few times then watched the dark plum coloured liquid fall into the glass. Jac was doubtful that this would be pleasant and not even Otis's assurance that it was going to be nice, she still doubted. And as soon as the liquid, thick and globular at times, touched her tongue, Jac nearly gagged. She didn't, however. She forced herself to swallow the dirt as quickly as she could. When she had drained three quarters of it, she stopped and spluttered, "water! Please can I have some water?" She propped herself on one elbow, looking at the healer through one half-open eye.
