Midnight has come and gone and of all places, Ella found herself wondering around the castle. It probably wasn't one of her best decisions, but she was willing to risk getting caught. The common room always felt so stuffy and cramped at night. Fresh air and a walk seemed like a good plan. So Ella had pulled a sweatshirt on and shoved her feet into a pair of yellow converse sneakers and snuck out. It wasn't often Ella went out past curfew. Not because she was a goody two shoes, but because the castle was creepy at night.
Just as she had this thought, Ella passed a metal suit of armor. She gave it a weary glance and hurried past. She forced herself not to turn around when she heard it squeak with movement. Instead, she just walked faster and turned the next corner. Bad choice. At the end of the hall was the caretaker, taking his patrol. Ella's eyes widened. This was the last person you wanted to get caught by. He wasn't known for being easy with punishments. Ella wandered if he saw her but her question was answered when he began yelling and heading her way.
She turned around and ran as fast as she could, her feet pounding against the floor. She went down a flight of stairs and up another one, trying to lose her follower. He, unlike her, knew all the secret corridors. He was always right behind her. Ella turned the next corridor and made a fast decision. She threw open a door, hurled herself inside and shut it behind her. She was quiet, aside from her heavy breathing. She pressed her ear to the door, listening carefully. It seemed she was safe for now...wherever she was.
