'So, I'm ordinary now? How can a man raised from the dead be ordinary? He has no friends, no allies, no job, no life and most importantly of all, he has no self of being.' Leigh said bitterly, closing one hand tightly, the other gripping his wand slightly too tight as red sparks burst from the tip. He knew she had touched a nerve, and he didn't doubt she knew it. He looked at her, glaring before he slowly smiled.
'I could always change that though... I could put you where Morziak had me, I could put you into the cold place where you feel nothing except the emptiness of the void that surrounds you, the echoes of your former friends as they scream and plead for mercy, receiving none in the end!' Leigh said coldly, his expression turning ever darker. His wand began to rotate from his palm again, as he turned to face her. 'Banishka!' He snapped suddenly, the dragon disappearing in a blaze of fiery sparks. 'And that's how your miserable end would come about, if I so wished it right now... I've gained that ability from Morziak to send people to that dark place, I don't know how and I don't want to, but if I ever did, I'd only strengthen him and I don't want that.'
He turned away from her and leant against the closest window sill and looked out onto the castle's courtyard, the shadows slowly sliding over each other as the moon moved slowly across the stone.
'Do you understand the futility of life?' He asked quietly.

Marishka rounded on him, infuriated by his threat upon her. 'Then do it!' she shouted, her voice echoing about the corridor. 'Morziak is dead - he can't get any stronger when Mandrake turned him to dust, so do it! I know you won't because you can't!'
Tears were in Marishka's eyes now. Exhaustion wrecked her body and she fell against the wall, putting her head back against the stone in an attempt to calm herself. 'And life's not futile. That's just stupid. Life is everything... it's all there is.' She wondered when she had begun to care so much about anything beyond herself, knowing she hated the feeling of worthlessness and weakness that came with it. A couple of hours ago she had been a goddess in her own little world - a parselmouth who was the apple of her parents eye, the leader of her friends, a beautiful young girl... now she was arguing with a man who said he could take all life if he pleased.
She opened her eyes slightly to look at where the dragon had just been sitting. Where was it now? Dead, she hoped.

Leigh smiled. Turning towards the girl, he knelt down and used his finger to wipe away her tears.
'Life is futile, but we are stubborn creatures who never give up and only do so when we cannot go any further, but still then, we push ourselves if there is something we care about in danger.' He said, sitting down beside her and resting his arms on his knees. 'We as magical folk are able to push ourselves beyond the normal limitations of what a muggle would would endure, but we still have out limitations and that is the futility of life.'
'Now, listen to me, I know you care and you're fighting within yourself by telling yourself you don't, but you usually do. I've baited you enough to see that.' He said, revealing the truth. 'You've shown you're true self, probably a side of you you never thought you'd see. There's only one last thing to do, I want you to search your feelings, truthfully and find out what side you're truly on... Because if you choose the wrong side, I may not be able to help you, or anyone else.'
With that, Leigh stood and looked once more down at the girl. He turned away from her and looked at where he was, knowing he was further away from his hidden room than intended. He had taken only a few steps when taking one last look at the girl.
'I'll find you when you have realised whose side you're truly on.' Leigh said, before stepping into the shadows and seemingly blending into them like Morziak.

Marishka watched him leave in his preternatural way, sound and light melting away with him. Her eyes were still blood shot and glistening in the moonlight, and for a moment she simply stared, frowning at the spot where he had gone, sniffling occasionally. Whose side I'm on? she questioned almost angrily, her head hot and aching still. I'm on MY side! I matter, no one else! The selfishness of it felt good, and she felt a little bit of herself shrink back into its comfortable shell where Addis could not reach her.
She sighed heavily, her breath trailing out before her, causing the silver veil to ripple. Marishka had not realised it was still there, and so she bought her knees up to her chest and rested her forehead on her knees, breathing deeply and letting the cool air sooth her sore eyes, knowing no one could see her.
Mandrake... I'll need to go see Mandrake again soon. Marishka thought suddenly. It occurred to her that what Addis had been talking about had plenty to do with her choices involving Mandrake, but for now at least she would go to him, to test him.
Curling against the wall, Marishka fell asleep, only waking up hours later as the sun came over the lake.
