She paced around the dressing room, constantly eying the clock that hung about the door. The clocked showed 5:15 p.m. and Kiari grew anxious. “Fifteen minutes,” she said, fixing her leotard, “fifteen more minutes ‘til I’m on and they’re still not here. What could be keeping them?” She asked her reflection in the mirror. “Dad promised he’d be here and mom hasn’t missed a performance yet. Where could they be?” There was a knock at the door and Kiari turned around with a smile. A mousey looking redhead walked in and Kiari’s smile faded. “Oh hey, Alessa, come to wish me luck?” Kiari asked, giving her best friend a hug. “No. I came here to tell you to break a leg, silly.” Alessa replied, looking around the dressing room. “Where are the ‘rents?” she asked, tucking a strand of curly hair behind her ear. “I dunno, they said they’d be here but…” Kiari sighed. “Then don’t worry, they’ll be here,” Alessa reassured her friend with a smile. “I’m sure they’re out in the audience right now. You just concentrate on your dancing, ok?” Kiari nodded as Alessa opened the door. They walked to the side of the stage and watched another young girl dance. Kiari glanced out at the crowd as the girl finished her performance. She turned and faced Alessa as the applause echoed throughout the audience. “I don’t see them, Alessa,” Kiari said nervously. “I’m sure they’re out there, its just dark. It’s probably just the lighting. Now break a leg.” Alessa said excitedly, walking away. Kiari took a deep breath and walked out onto the stage. She began to dance as the music started; leaping, spinning, writing poetry with her body. All her hard work and extra practices had paid off but as she skimmed the crowd before her, she still saw no sight of her parents, not even a glimpse of her mother’s golden blonde hair. The music had finally come to a stop, signaling the end of her performance. She smiled as the applause once again filled the room. Kiari gracefully curtsied and exited the stage. Ignoring the congratulations and praises from the other dancers, she angrily made her way back to her dressing room, cursing her family under her breath. “I can’t believe them,” she said hotly to Alessa, who was sitting on the chair with her head down, “They didn’t show! What crap is that?” “Kiari,” Alessa started, “I’ve got to tell you something.” Kiari looked at her in the mirror. “Ok, what is it?” Alessa stood up and turned on the T.V. She switched to the news and there on the screen was a blown up picture of Kiari’s parents. Kiari spun around and looked at the screen, her face flushed. “Turn that up,” Kiari said softly. “Turn it up, turn it up!” She said much louder. Alessa turned the volume up and stared at the ground, avoiding eye contact with Kiari. The news anchor came back on. “According to sources, Detective James Kenton and his wife, Marissa, were on their way to their daughter’s ballet recital when their car lost control and rolled off the bridge. Kenton and his wife were killed instantly.” The woman reported, tapping her papers on the desk in front of her, “Now Rick with the weather. Rick?” Kiari stared at the T.V., tears filling her eyes. Alessa stood up and turned it off, still avoiding eye contact. “It isn’t true,” Kiari said, tears rolling down her cheek, “It can’t be. Please tell me it isn’t, Alessa.” Alessa opened her mouth to speak when a knock at the door interrupted her. Kiari’s ballet teacher walked in, followed by a young policeman. Alessa started crying and ran out of the room. Kiari looked at her teacher in disbelief and stared at the ground, her face pale as death, eyes tear stained. Mrs. Ulna wrapped her arms around Kiari as the young girl burst into sobs, shaking her head. Kiari was alone.
