"It's a highly debated issue. Some people believe that comets were formed at the same time and with the same process that the planets were formed, other people believe that they formed around the orbits of Neptune and its surround planets, by freezing and refreezing a floating mass of rock or some such, but other claim fiercely that there have been some developing around Jupiter, but that the planets strong gravity has released the comets straight into the sun and thus no one can study the theory."

Algernon laughed again, nodding, a pleased smile on his face. "Very good, Ms. Ollivander! 20 points to Ravenclaw for a much more in depth answer than I expected. Yes, there are many theroys as to exactly where or when they were formed, but we do know that they are formed in clouds of debris, either, as Helia said, in the original cloud of debris, or that which orbits one or more of our planets. The important factor to understand is that out of a cloud, a random swirling mass of gasses, and ice, and rock, a comet is formed, the tiny particals fused together to become one thing. The thing is... more than just gasses and rock exist in such clouds. Here we delve back into the mystical. Swirling in those clouds, also, are possiblities."

Erika looked up curiously. "What kinds of possibilities?" she asked.

Something sparked in Helias imaginative side, "There could be anything. If there are magical forces in the gases that create comets, there could be unfathomable magical properties in the nucleus of a comet, made up of millions of years of unknown, ungrasped magic."

Thom scowled disapprovingly. "I knew that..." He lied.

Algernon nodded, "Very good hypothisizing, Ms. Ollivander. 10 more points. As you say, magic is trapped within the comets. And magic, you see, attracts more magic. So when a comet comes close to earth..." He trailed off, hoping a student would pick up the thread.

Thom wrinkled his nose, perplexed. "When it comes near... the world explodes... in a giant magical fart?"

Erika just stared at Thom. "Oh yeah! That's exactly what happens! Sure, the world just explodes in a huge magical fart!" she snapped sarcastically.
